#Goals

Recently my husband and I were having a conversation about our goals and things we want to accomplish next year. We were talking about how we always set out to accomplish goals and somehow we never get around to it. He was telling me how he has all these amazing things he sets out to do, but most of the time he forgets them. I responded with “that's crazy because I too go through the same thing”. I'm either forgetting what I set out to do, overwhelm myself with too much, or become discouraged when things don’t happen the way I envision. I wrote a blogpost about procrastination and how it keeps us from getting to our goals, but further thinking about goals made me realize there are some other reasons we don't always accomplish the things we set out to do. You can be determined and focused but still miss the mark. I figured there has to be a way to tackle and accomplish my goals. I have compounded 4 ways to tackling your goals.

Write your goals down
  1. WRITE THEM DOWN

One of the most efficient ways to accomplishing your goals is to write them down. Too often we set out to accomplish big things, but we do not write them down, which leads to either forgetting them or they travel to the back of your mind and no longer become a priority. We become like my husband and I and just simply forget. When we write our goals down we are more likely to accomplish them. Seeing is believing right? So write your goals out so that you can see them in print and focus on getting things done. I am very forgetful. I would literally walk into the kitchen to grab a drink and get to the kitchen and forget what I went in there for. (LOL) So just imagine having a goal in mind and not writing it out. I definitely will forget what I thought about, listen it could be something very important to me and the way my mind is set up I WILL FORGET. So writing out my goals is super important to me. Even if I don't complete the task at hand, its still there written out for me to complete the next time. “Then the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it.” Habakkuk 2:2 Write it down and make it happen.

    2. START SMALL

One mistake people make when setting goals is they overwhelm themselves with too many or they go for things that are not attainable.. Everything that comes to mind is now a goal and you must accomplish it. Especially starting a new year , we want to accomplish it all. Do not overwhelm yourself with too many goals, it is okay to start small!. Set about 3 goals a week to accomplish. Of course you can set monthly and yearly goals also. But, do not overwhelm yourself. Because if you overwhelm yourself with so many goals you will not complete them, which will lead to giving up. When you start to achieve those goals eventually you will be able to add more and more, but if you are just starting out do not overwhelm yourself with too much. The goal is to win. Small wins lead to big wins. It’s just like working out. The first time we go to the gym we don't do every possible exercise and hit every machine. If we did we’d overwhelm ourselves and never go back. Instead we pace ourselves with a little here and a little there and eventually we can do more and more. Treat your goals as such so you don't give up after the first try. “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.” Luke 16:10 Be great with least and God will bless you to gain more!

    3. SET CLEAR GOALS.

Know what your goals are and make sure they are attainable. Set clear and concise goals and work hard to achieve them. For me getting at least one blogpost out a week is a goal for me. I stay on myself to make this happen every week. I know I want my blog to be successful so I know I have to be consistent with the content I post, so therefore I have to make it a goal to get content out weekly. So my big goal is to have a successful blog, but my weekly goal is to publish a post weekly. Maybe I should have made this the first step because it is one of the most important. If you don't know clearly what your goals are you cant even complete steps one and two. What would you write down? Know what you want and go for it! For some losing weight maybe the ultimate goal. Weekly your goals should be to work out, eat properly, etc. Know what you want to accomplish and go for it! “Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established.” Proverbs 16:3 Commit! Commit! Commit!

    4. DONT BE DISCOURAGED.

Things won’t always happen exactly the way you want them to. Don't be discouraged by the things they may pop up and throw you off track. Keep going don't give up. Things will arise and situations won’t always happen the way you planned. For example I mentioned working out. You have a goal to go to the gym every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, but something comes up Wednesday and you can’t go. Now does this mean just give up because something unexpected came up? Definitely not, this is where your creativity comes in to play. Work out anyway! You don't have to go to the gym to workout. You may not have all the equipment that the gym has but you can jog, walk, or do exercise at home. We have to learn how to improvise when things don't go exactly the way we desire. Don't give up or be discouraged because life happens and not the way we always see fit. Commit to your goals so that when trouble arises you wont be discouraged but encouraged to keep going. “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” Galatians 6:9 Never Ever Give Up!

How to set and achieve your goals

I believe that setting goals are extremely important to our lives. We should know where we want to see ourselves in the coming times. Our lives are predestined by God, but that doesn't mean we should just sit around and let whatever is gonna happen, happen. We need to set goals to accomplish, pray on and about those goals, and actively work to accomplish them. Emmitt Smith once said, “ your dreams are only your dreams until you write them down… then they are your goals” Dream big! Write out your goals, start small, be concise, and don't be discouraged.
